“Don’t Hate, Just Debate!” is a motto that is heard fairly often in the halls at Regina. This motto represents none other than Regina’s very own debate team.
If a student was asked as few as two years ago about the debate team they would most likely reply with their own question, “We have a debate team?”
The debate team at Regina is not new, but it is really starting to take off thanks to the leadership of President Camille Davis ‘10 and moderator Mr. Greene. Their most recent endeavor was a debate in the library about whether or not schools should censor school newspapers, and other written publications. Fellow students, teachers, staff, and families attended this debate.
“For the first big debate I felt that it had run smoothly with little to no problems. I thoroughly enjoyed it,” commented Mr. Zidlicky, a debating fanatic, and teacher at Regina.
Another recent activity that the debate team has undertaken was attending the debate finals between University School and Shaker High School about race crime punishment enhancement.
“I feel that this was beneficial for our team. They were able to see firsthand the way an actual competitive debate goes,” said Debate president Camille Davis.
Debate sounds boring or scary to some students, but the thing one must realize is this group of 15 young women likes to have fun. They are always welcoming new members, and sometimes debate fun or silly things.
“My favorite silly thing that was debated is big carrots versus baby carrots,” said Junior Debate Team member Laura Smith.
This past school year, the Debate team has purchased a stylish and comfortable sweatsuit set. These sweats helped to show the rest of the school that Debate was the next big thing. You can see these shirts, sweatpants, and hoodies all over the school on dress down days.
“I feel the sweat sets were a great idea. They show debate’s fun side, and they are also a great way to build club unity. Plus they are really comfy!” said Noha Bechara, head of public affairs for Debate.
The main goasl of debate are to give its members confidence and to open up their minds to the other side of arguments. Also, Debate helps students interact with each other. It helps them to be able to discuss issues without harm.
Debate has many more large debates coming up. They are also planning on attending Model UN this year. Debate is a great example of the leadership, initiative, and potential that girls find at Regina.
