Ms. Mary Hurley Gives First-Hand Account
of Life in Post-Quake Haiti

“Life in Haiti before the January 12th earthquake was filled with misery and poverty,” said Mary Hurley. “The pain and suffering after the earthquake has risen to levels that are unimaginable.”

Ms. Hurley, who volunteers with the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa, recently spoke to the Regina High community.  She reflected on her 17 years of working with the people of Haiti, including her first-hand account of life after the earthquake.

“In all the years I have worked with them, I have found the Haitian people to be resilient,” she said. Ms. Hurley mentioned that prior to the earthquake, 80% of the people had very little lived in poverty. She explained that when the earthquake hit, rather than complain, the people of this quake-hit Caribbean nation offered prayers of thanksgiving for what they still had.

She cited the many times that we are wasteful with our resources, simply because we have an abundance. We tend to take them for granted. Ms. Hurley explained that we have the opportunity each day to make the world a better place by the choices we make. She encouraged us to think of the people of Haiti and those in countries like Haiti. She asked that we make good use of our resources.

Finally, Ms. Hurley requested that we never forget the Haitians. “We worship by the way we treat one another,” she said. “Please pray for these people.”

Following the assembly, Jasmine Hayes, Student Council president, presented Ms. Hurley with a check from the Regina High community. The funds will go directly to help the destitute, handicapped and orphaned children of Haiti, where Ms. Hurley volunteers.

Student Council is sponsoring a "Have a Heart for Haiti" collection from February 8 through the 16th. Please donate in homeroom.
