As part of its pre-engineering curriculum, students are participating in an Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD) project this school year. The student team is being funded by the Convergence Education Foundation (CEF). Blending creativity with engineering, science, math and advancing technologies, students will actually conceptualize, build and drive a fiberglass, electric-powered vehicle with an innovative twist. The project will culminate in October 2008, when all participants will showcase their vehicles at the Convergence Global Transportation Electronics Conference at COBO Hall in Detroit, Michigan.
Regina is the first all-girl school and all-girl team that has been awarded the opportunity to participate, and is one of only eight new teams in the program. The Regina team includes 18 students, along with three teachers who have been specially trained for this mission.
“Our students are motivated and are already brainstorming some remarkably innovative ideas,” said Marie Walsh, one of Regina’s pre-engineering teachers. “This is a hands-on way to make engineering, science and math come alive in a practical, yet fun manner.”
Corporate partners in the area will assist as coaches through the duration of the project. In addition, students will have access to an ad hoc committee of advisors. |
