The second annual “Art in April” event will be held on April 30, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at Regina High Schoo,l in conjunction with an Open House for grade school students interested in attending Regina. Students in the 6th and 7th grade from fourteen Catholic grade schools in the area will be participating in the art show, which will be exhibited in Regina’s hallways through the middle of May. Alumnae and current Regina High School students’ work will also be displayed. Grade school students will also have the opportunity to participate in the “bling fling” in which they will make their own jewelry.
Students from Archbishop Lyke School, Immaculate Conception, Metro Catholic School, Notre Dame Elementary School, Peaceful Children Montessori, St. Barnabas School, St. Clare School, St. Dominic School, St. Felicitas School, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Gregory the Great School, St. Helen School, St. Paschal Baylon School, and St. Thomas Aquinas School will be judged in a competition by Regina alumnae and art professionals, including Robin Ott, Norbert Koehn, Jane VanBurgen, Sr. Megan Dull, and Nancy Prudric. The competition is fashioned after a professional art show and includes the categories of crafts, drawing, painting, pen and ink, and photography and digital imaging.
An award ceremony will be held at 6:30 and will include individual awards within each category as well as general awards, such as Best in Show. Prizes will include art materials, certificates, and Regina paraphernalia. The event, hosted by Ms. Kathleen Gardner, head of the art department at Regina, is highly anticipated within the Regina community. “The art work was so outstanding last year that the judges were reviewing entries for more than a few hours. We’re expecting the same great results this year,” she said. “It’s a good opportunity for us as a Catholic high school to showcase Catholic grade school art, and it alows people to experience our school. Since we exhibit our student work as well as alumnae work, it gives people a good opportunity to see what’s going on at Regina in the arts as well as other areas."
Ms. Gardner, as well as art students at Regina and Ms. Ellen Matthews, director of admissions at Regina, have been hard at work behind-the-scenes matting and labeling work, sending out correspondence, and planning the activities. “It’s a lot of fun,” says Ms. Gardner. “It’s like a celebration.” The rest of the Regina community is also anticipating this exciting event.
